NGC 4631, also known as the Whale Galaxy, is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici. It earned its nickname due to its resemblance to a whale swimming through space when observed edge-on. Discovered by William Herschel in 1787, NGC 4631 is approximately 30 million light-years away from Earth.NGC 4631 is part of a small group of galaxies known as the NGC 4631 Group, which includes several smaller satellite galaxies. Additionally, it's believed to be interacting gravitationally with a nearby galaxy known as NGC 4656, also called the Hockey Stick Galaxy, due to its distinctive shape.
